An Interesting Day in DC

So today is one of those days spent in DC that leaves you feeling somewhat disoriented. We spent the day on the boat of a co-worker of ours, BBQing, enjoying the beautiful weather, and meeting some interesting people.

The first really interesting thing that happened, aside from stepping foot on a yacht for the first time in years, was seeing an F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter jet fly overhead as we pulled out from the dock on our way to the traditional blessing of the fleet. That was the first time I've ever seen a stealth fighter in flight with my own eyes. Impressive aircraft.

The next interesting thing that happened was meeting a lady who's worked for Robert Strauss for 30 years. Mr. Strauss played an important role in the Presidency of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. As I enjoyed her ribs, succotash, and potato salad, I listened raptly to her recounting her years with Mr. Strauss and his influence upon Reagan during the Iran Contra crisis.

The final interesting thing that happened was that I met the guy who sold Duke Cunningham his boat…you know, the one that was embroiled in the scandal that sent Congressman Cunningham to jail for 9 years. This guy testified before the FBI and a grand jury and knew Cunningham fairly well. See the Wiki article I linked to above for more details. This is the same scandal that continues to grow and many believe that former CIA head Porter Goss has resigned due to his role in the scandal.

As someone who's jacked in to the political intrigue that goes on in DC via blogs and the main stream media, it was one of those days that makes me shake my head and think, "Is this for real?"
